Health Tip: What Causes Dandruff?
Source:Yahoo Editor:HealthDay Read:
(HealthDay News) -- Dandruff is caused by a fat-eating yeast-like fungus called malassezia, which lives on most people's scalps without causing a problem, according to the Ontario government.
Sometimes, however, this fungus grows out of control and causes faster cell production than usual. New cells thus move much more quickly from the deepest layer of your scalp to the outer layer, where they flake and fall off.
While doctors don't know why only some people are affected, increased oil production may be partly to blame.
Here are some flake control suggestions:
- Reduce the stress in your life. It may help reduce dandruff symptoms.
- Wash your hair daily to get rid of excess oil and flakes. Use a gentle shampoo.
- Cut down on styling products. Sometimes the buildup of hair sprays, gels and mousses can make your scalp oily.
